In January, my dad flew to Germany for a short visit. It was a very special visit for him because he was able to attend the retirement ceremony of one of his very good friends, Franz. He and Franz worked together for 3 years when my dad was stationed at Sembach Air Base back in the 1990's. Franz and Hella are my "German parents". I've know them since I was 10 years old. And it's funny - Franz reminds me so much of my dad, and Hella is a lot like my mom. So they truly are the German equivalent of my parents!
My dad was only here 5 days, so I didn't want to pack too much into his visit. But we were able to do some fun things together. We ate lots of good German food, went on a fun day trip, and my dad even killed a boar with Franz! It was such a treat to have my daddy here. As wonderful as it is to live overseas, it does get tough to be away from family. Having a relative here is like having a little piece of home. And it's nice to show our friends and family where we live and what our life is like here.
